Secret Success of the Special Gift
I was asked to help celebrate another much loved dog–friend by capturing their likeness in sculpture and taking it through the casting process to become a Bronze to be treasured and enjoyed.
The Dog was a mix of Weimaraner and Poodle – a lovely and unique personality to be ‘caught’ in clay.
We will have the full details of the making of this birthday gift and its final cast in Bronze over the next few weeks.
In order to make such a detailed portrait sculpture I take many weeks to build up the features and then add all the characteristics of hair and expression. The hair needs to be able to cast safely in Bronze and yet should have that sense of flow, movement and individuality.
It is a matter of putting in detail and then blending it out again and repeating this, until the look is in place. Also the thought needs to be in mind of how the work will catch the light and create shadows.
The time it takes to make these artworks and to meet with clients, study the individual dog’s traits means that I can only take on a limited number of commissions – though sometimes projects can be interleaved.
It is possible to be working on the early stages of one project, while ‘resting’ from the fine detail of work on another sculpture.
